On October 7 every year, the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Do you know why?

Above is the banner of the Holy League flown by John of Austria on his flagship Real during the Battle of Lepanto, one of the most famous naval battles in history. It took place on October 7, 1571 on the Bay of Lepanto off the coast of Greece. The opposing forces were Christians, made up of a Holy League alliance of fleets from Spain and Italy, against a far superior Turkish navy. The Muslim force was threatening to take over the Mediterranean Sea and if they won, they would be in a position to attack European countries.

Two years earlier, in 1569, Pope Pius V introduced the mysteries of the Rosary and taught that it has both a vocal and mental element. He asked the Christian faithful to pray the Rosary and seek the intercession of the Blessed Mother to defeat the Muslim navy. Despite being outnumbered, the Christian fleet won!

After that important and historic victory, a feast for Mary called Our Lady of Victory was established. In 1573, Pope Gregory XIII changed the name of the feast to Our Lady of the Rosary and we still celebrate it every year.
